בשורות מצערות מגיעות מארה"ב הערב (ראשון). מינסוטה טימברוולבס הודיעה כי מאמנה, פליפ סונדרס, הלך לעולמו בגיל 60, לאחר שאובחן מוקדם יותר הקיץ כחולה בסרטן מסוג לימפומת הודג'קין.
המאמן, לו היו סמכויות גם כג'נרל מנג'ר בוולבס, אושפז בבית חולים מאז חודש ספטמבר. הקבוצה מינתה את עוזרו, סם מיצ'ל, למחליפו הזמני, אבל רק לפני יומיים הודיע הבעלים גלן טיילור כי סונדרס לא יחזור לאמן במהלך העונה שבפתח. אלא שמצבו הורע בימים האחרונים והוא נכנע למחלה.
סונדרס החל את קריירת האימון שלו ב-NBA במינסוטה, אותה אימן בין 1995 ל-2005, אז הוליך אותה לפלייאוף 8 פעמים. לאחר שפוטר, הוא מונה למאמן דטרויט במקום לארי בראון, ושם אימן שלוש שנים - בכולם הפסיד בגמר המזרח. לאחר מכן העביר שלוש שנים בוושינגטון, ובקיץ שעבר סגר מעגל וחזר לוולבס.
החדשות הגיעו לרחבי עולם הכדורסל והתגובות לא איחרו להגיע, אפילו מצד לברון ג'יימס ושחקן מכבי ת"א, טרבור אמבקווה (ששיחק אצל סונדרס בוולבס).
