בימים האחרונים מגיעים עוד ועוד הספדים על קובי בראיינט, כאלה שבתקשורת כולה חיכו מגורמים בולטים בנוף של ה-NBA ובעיקר כאלה מהפרנצ'ייס הענק שנקרא הלוס אנג'לס לייקרס. היום (חמישי) הגיע תורה של נשיאת המועדון, ג'יני באס, שהייתה מאד מקורבת למשפחת בראיינט. באס פרסמה פוסט מרגש בעמוד האיסטגרם שלה בה כתבה את הדברים הבאים:
"קובי, אני לא יודעת איך להביע עד כמה את חשוב עבורי, עבור המשפחה שלי ועבור הלוס אנג'לס לייקרס. אבא שלי אהב אותך כמו בן, וזה הופך אותנו למשפחה. כשהזמנת אותי לארוחת צהריים זמן קצר אחרי שאבי הלך לעולמו, התקשתי מאד למצוא מוטיבציה ותכלית. קובי, הבאת את ג'יאנה כדי שתעביר את הזמן איתי. הסברת שרצית להראות לה איך נשים יכולות להיות מנהיגות ב-NBA, בדיוק כמו הגברים. תחילה זה היה נראה כמו פעולה של אב מסור שנותן דוגמא לבת שלו. אבל בעצם, ואני בטוחה שידעת בדיוק מה אתה עושה, מה שעשית זה להעניק לי את ההשראה והכוח שחיפשתי".
"אני נזכרת ביום הזה הרבה וזה גורם לי לחייך והופך אותי לחזקה יותר. אני נזכרת בדבר הזה כל פעם שאני מרגישה מדוכאת או זקוקה לקצת אומץ. עבור כל דבר שעשית על הפרקט שמילא אותי בכל כך הרבה אושר ואהבה, ועבור כל החיים ששינית דרך הכדורסל עצמו, היום הזה עם ג'יג'י היה מה שהצית מחדש את הדרייב והרצון שלי להמשיך".
"ונסה, נטליה, ביאנקה וקפרי - אני כל כך משתתפת בצערכן. אנחנו תמיד נהיה פה עבורכן. לכל המשפחות שאיבדו את אהוביהם ביום ראשון, כל משפחת הלייקרס מרכינה את ראשה איתכם. לכל אנשי הלייקרס - אנחנו משפחה אחת גדולה שאבלה על האובדן של אנשים אהובים. נבכה ביחד, אבל גם נבריא ביחד, נאהב ביחד וננצח ביחד".

When you invited me to lunch shortly after my father passed away, I was struggling to find motivation and purpose. Kobe, you brought Gianna with you to spend some time with me. You explained that you wanted to show her that women can be leaders in the NBA, just like the men. At first, it seemed like an action of a devoted father setting an example for his daughter. But in actuality – and I am positively sure you knew EXACTLY what you were doing – what you did was give me the inspiration and strength I was searching for. I reflect on that day often and it makes me smile and it makes me strong. I call on that memory whenever I feel down and need a bit of courage. For everything you did on the court that filled me with so much joy and love, for all the lives you changed through basketball itself, it was that day with Gigi that reignited my drive and determination. Vanessa, Natalia, Bianka, and Capri - I am so sorry for your loss. We are grateful to have you in our lives and we will always be here for you.
